The role of a company secretary is to diarise any meetings as well as plan and organise events and meetings on behalf of the company. It is important that the company secretary has good listening and organising skills as well as the ability to write up reports. Some of the administration duties which the company secretary would need to do includes typing up letters and e-mails, contacting clients or third parties to arrange and organise meetings. Sort out departmental paperwork as and when necessary and answering the telephone.

There are various training and qualifications available to enhance the skills and knowledge in order to improve and continue in the role. There are short hand writing qualifications as well as administration qualifications, all of which will be very beneficial to the company. The working hours of the company secretary will depend on the company; however the company secretary may be required to go to events and meetings outside of working hours, so it is essential that the company secretary is flexible towards these shifts.

As with most roles nowadays, the use of computer is essential, the company secretary must have good typing skills and be able to operate the computer and the software programmes including Microsoft office.

There are various administration roles advertised across the websites including job boards and other recruitment sites. Company secretary roles may not be advertised so often due to the people taking up these roles may work until retirement age. It is an important role and the salaries are quite competitive, with some reaching 30,000+ depending on the size of the company and the responsibilities there are.
