A person who produces things made out of metal like steel or iron via forging is a Blacksmith . Metals are forged using different tools like hammer, bending and cutting the metal. They are very skilled workers in molding or shaping iron metals for gates, railings, furniture, cooking utensils, weapons and other things made out metal. Recently, blacksmiths uses the derivative of a black metal that is the steel. The black color originates from the layer of oxides that is created on the surface of the metal that is due to the fire scale.

Smite is the original word in which smith came from which implies to hit; therefore Blacksmith is someone who hits a black metal. They do work via exposing heat small parts of molded or shaped iron or steel up to a time when the metal becomes delicate enough to be formed with hand tools like anvil, chisel and hammer. Heating is played along with a forge fired by natural gas, charcoal or propane.

The Blacksmith of today also utilizes oxyacetylene or same blowlamp for more focused heating. The temperature and the ability to work with metal are determined by the color after it has been exposed to very high temperature. At the start, when iron or metal brought to increased temperatures, a glow of red, turned to orange, yellow and lastly white until it melts. The shining yellow-orange color known to be the ideal heat or forging heat is common to forging. Most blacksmiths also work in a dim or has low-light conditions to be able to see the radiance of the metal as it glows.

In case when the iron ore produced into usable metal, a specific quantity of carbon is commonly blended or alloyed with the iron. An instance of this is charcoal has almost pure carbon alloyed with the iron. Carbon content is has a very crucial effect due to the properties of the metal.

A carbon with a content beyond 2%, which is quite brittle and not used for blacksmithing, is termed as cast iron because it has a melting point that is comparatively low and can easily, be casted. Tool steel results when carbon content is between 0.25% and 2%, which can be treated by heat. Wrought or mild steel is made with below 0.25% of carbon content. These terms are the standard by blacksmiths, also known to be not interchangeable, and are a consideration in making metals.
