subject: Tony Awards [print this page] The former tonight show host Conan O'Brien has been reported to turn down an offer of hosting the Tony Awards this year. These awards are scheduled on 13th of June in the New York City. He was offered the position with CBS. He declined it because apparently the gig would violate his deal with his former network NBC. NBC paid Conan O'Brien and staff of The Tonight Show 40 million dollars for the deal that he will not be appearing for any performance until 1st May of this year.
Sources close to O Brien explained that he can do interviews but he cannot perform; also, he also can't speak freely about NBC. But the reps of the network have stated this claim as inaccurate. An NBC representative explained that the deal only restricts him from hosting until 1st of May. He said, "The severance agreement gives Conan the explicit right to do hosting gigs after 1st of May, so its B.S. that he 'can't perform, and if he wanted to 'speak freely about NBC,' he shouldn't have accepted NBC's over $40 mill payoff."
As the contract is until 1st of May and the Tony Awards will not be held until 13th of June, it is not understandable why Conan OBrien did not accept such a good offer. A source comments that he could have hosted the Tony Awards. It is more likely that he did not want to do it, and used his agreement with NBC as an excuse to turn down the offer. A source close to O Brien adds that he is still looking around for the perfect comeback gig. Apparently, the Tonys just was not perfect enough for him.
O'Brien will be getting on board for a tour titled Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television which is scheduled for different cities around the country. This tour will be starting off from April 12 and will go on until 14th of June. Notably, if O Brien had accepted the Tonys hosting gig, the tour schedule would have conflicted with it.
Celebrating the best of Broadway, the sixty fourth Annual Tony Awards will be broadcasted live from the Radio City Music Hall on 13th of June. CBS will be telecasting the three-hour evening, beginning at 8 PM ET. There will be different events on 29th of April, 4th of May, 5th of May and 20th of May and they will be leading up to the final celebration on 13th of June.
