subject: Examining The Most Common Injury Types Resulting From Motorcycle Accidents [print this page]

Motorcycles are fun and fast and a blast to ride, if you know what you are doing and are a safe driver. Serious riders have taken safety courses and have learned how to drive correctly. Some of the safety skills that are taught in a typical safety course include: not to bob in between traffic when riding on the road, to use you lights to be as visible as possible to other drivers, and information on the proper use of safety equipment and other protective gear.

Even with the safety basics under your belt, you may still become a victim of a motorcycle accident. If you are involved in an accident, one of the most common reasons for experiencing an injury is due to the lack of protection around the body like a car would provide. Riders frequently experience broken bones, most commonly the legs and arms. If you think about it these are the extremities that are exposed to the road and hit first, and often your normal reaction is to brace yourself with your arms or cover your face with your arms for protection.

Lets face it the road is hard, and if the car following you or in front of you does not see you then they run into you or force you into another lane or vehicle causing an accident, there is a high potential for injury. The typical road rash, which is where the flesh meets the road, is an abrasion injury. You may see riders with shorts and short sleeve shirts. If they were to fall off the bike, chances are they may experience a road rash injury.

In addition to broken bones and road rash, motorcycles can lead to many other common injuries, such as head injury, spinal cord injury, or loss of limbs. In the worst case scenario, a motorcycle accident can result in a fatal injury. To avoid becoming a motorcycle accident statistic, remember: be smart, ride cautiously, and use the skills you were taught to do when riding.
