How Newbies Can Choose The Right Domain Names To Buy and Sell

If you are a newbie, it is very crucial to choose the right domain names to buy and sell if you are going to distinguish yourself from the masses who register loads of names only to be stuck with them.

You are in the domain business to make a profit - not just to register names. You are not yet seasoned enough to register domain names that are non dotcoms, ie .net, .info, .biz or some country extensions like .tv or .us (cctlds)

So the first rule is to stick to .Coms. Dotcom is still king. By registering names in this extension, you have a greater margin of error. That is, you are more likely to sell a lousy .com than you are to sell a lousy .biz.

Some other guidelines that will help you choose the right domain names are:

a. Avoid vice domains, those about sex and gambling

b. Choose generic names if you can get them. That is stick to names that people can readily associate with a product or service rather registering a brandable name.

So for example, you should register tvsets dot com (if possible) rather than some made up name like gadazzu dot com.

c. Avoid registering trade mark (TM) domains). This could land you in serious trouble. At the very least, the name will be taken from you.

d. Do register one to two word domains. Avoid longer domains.

e. Avoid hyphenated names unless they are really good. In my opinion, New-York -City dotcom - good. United-Kingdom -Of-Great-Britain-And -Northern -Ireland dotcom - (bad)

f. Find keywords to register that trigger Google ads. Are people looking for this keyword? Are people advertising for the keyword? All important questions.

g. Join popular domain forms and read what others have to say, There is a wealth of free information on the internet.

When looking for domain name ideas, look for trends. Keep your eyes and ears open. Read magazines an listen to the news. Research industries.

Alternatively, you could buy domains that already have been well researched by people who know the domaining business a lot better than you do. These people know the kind of names to register that would more likely get sold.
