The summer of 2010 sees the mobile phone community welcome a new member to its ranks, the Apple iPhone 4. And taking an initial first look at this handset it is immediately obvious that this phone leapfrogs other handsets straight to the front of the pack thanks to gorgeous looks, great functionality and impressive features.

The quality of image reproduction produced by the iPhone 4's super quality screen is more similar to what you would find on printed page and not a computer screen. The original iPhone displayed 163 pixels per inch and even then it pushed the boundaries of what we expected from such a display. The 326 pixels per inch rating on this new screen totally eclipses this and produces unparalleled image quality, even when zoomed in. The display is named the "Retina" display on the basis that its specification actually exceed what the human eye can see. The huge resolution of 960 x 640 pixels is the best currently available, and thanks to using the IPS technology (in Plane Switching) that you will find on the iPad and iMacs, this makes the images have a more vivid colour reproduction with deeper black colours and a superb viewing angle. The 3.5" display is the same size as the one on the 3GS, but the overall dimensions of the chassis are less in the width and depth department, whilst the height remains the same. An increase of 2 million pixels is a significant jump from the 3 million pixel camera found on the iPhone 3GS.

Despite the iPhone 4 boasting a fairly industry standard 5 mega pixels, one must not get to weighed down with the resolution rating and look at the actual quality of the image, which is crystal clear. Thanks to an improved sensor being fitted, pixel size is increased which makes them more absorbent to light, ultimately resulting in a more vivid and colourful image. An LED flash has also been fitted to the camera, making capturing photographs in even the darkest conditions now an easy task. Another big advancement is in terms of video capture. Last years step up from the 3G to the 3GS saw the introduction of this, this year we see the movie side of thing hauled right up to date thanks to 720P resolution video capture, or more simply put, High Definition. A second front facing camera has also been fitted to allow for "FaceTime" video calling and also self portraits. The iPhone 4 is certainly an impressive handset, and is set to be an absolute winner with consumers thanks to Apple not making this the standard annual update, but rather a total overhaul of what was already a great phone.

The iPhone 4 and the Samsung S5620 Monte are available now.
