How many times have you started an activity and then found yourself a few short moments later wondering off and thinking of something else? It probably feels like a thousand times a day, if not a thousand times an hour. How many unfinished projects are piled up around the home or office because something else always comes up that seems more important? Probably too many to count and definitely too many to remember. If you have ever drifted off and found yourself ignoring the task at hand, you have already experienced what it's like to have you attention unfocused and misplaced. Properly focused attention can help you create the life you want. Developing complete attention (with total focus and concentration) is very important if you ever want to experience the life of your dreams. Your quest for personal development has brought to this point, which is evidence of your attention. Congratulations! Keep evolving it. Like other skills, your attention will get better with training and exercise.
At the moment, we don't need a bunch of studies and statistics to tell us that most people do not use or develop their complete attention skills properly. We can usually witness this by the amount of people that complain about not having the things they want in life. They are too busy complaining about their jobs, their relationships, their finances or life in general. These complainers might be suffering from many afflictions, such as laziness, low self-esteem and self-confidence or even an attitude of entitlement. Either way, it still boils down to where they place their attention. In some ways, these complainers are Masters of attention. They just misplace their attention and focus it on things that create more problems rather than solutions. Over time, it's like curing concrete; it becomes harder and harder. This form of attention becomes solid because of high levels of concentration and focus. Learning how to get unstuck from this type of affect may require an in depth personal development course that specializes in attention control techniques. Learning how to catch and release attention so as to never get stuck is important to the success of your goals. Always ask yourself: Am I focusing on being stuck or am I focusing on finding a solution?
By the way...how many times did you become distracted while reading up to this point? If zero times, that is awesome. If your found your mind somewhere else and then came back, then congratulations. Either way, everybody has their attention challenged. Regardless, everyone needs to strengthen their attention control because attention is what creates your reality. Whatever you place your attention on will expand and grow, which is why the complainers see more evidence of their own plight. Their reality becomes more solid every day. As far as distractions go, it is simply a matter of developing better concentration skills. Once your attention become heavy (more dense) from concentration, you'll have something substantial to focus. Think of bowling. The goal is to knock down as many pins at once. The pins are the goal, the bowling ball is the attention. If the ball is too light then it may not have the weight to project into the group of pins and get bounced outward. However, if the ball is heavier (more dense), the same well placed delivery has more weight to push into the group of pins. So, if you project a heavier concentration of attention into your goal, you'll see a substantial difference. There are many personal development books and courses that provide training exercises to develop concentration. Once you have developed concentration, focusing it is the next step.
Most people confuse focus, concentration and attention when in fact they are all separate things that work together. Together, they are known as complete attention. Concentrated attention particles that are focused properly achieve a higher percentage of the goals. Ask professional athletes, successful businessmen or anyone that knows how to hit their target consistently; they all know this formula. We all have attention, it just needs to be focused properly to point at the target (the goal) you want to hit. Focus is like narrowing the spectrum of options. If you see too much then you don't know what to shoot at. If you see to little, then you might overdo in one area and under perform in another. Knowing what to focus on is very important. In fact, one of the reasons the personal development industry is so huge--and still growing--is because more people are looking for training that will help them realize the primary goals they should be focusing on. This way they don't waste their attention working towards useless goals.
Focusing your attention on non-empowering activities is a misuse of your attention. However, if you are interested in personal development, then focusing your attention on empowering activities should be your new goal. Your goal should always be to build the life skills necessary to create the life of your dreams. Try starting with your complete attention. Have a great journey.
