Back in the year 1964, a woman, 40 years of age applied for admission to the local university's college of literature, science and the arts in raggedy farm clothes. This woman who proclaimed that she wanted to become a doctor came fresh from a chicken farm armed with nothing but a convent education. Since the admissions head was so skeptical, she got sent to the university psychologist first before getting her approval.
This spring, the university spokesman states that this lady has set a personal record that is an achievement unlikely to be paralleled, which took ten years in the making. They also add how great this woman was for in the course of those 10 long years, she struggled to keep up with the demands of premedical and medical school requirements for her doctorate degree and at the same time, she and her husband raised their ten children.
This lady physician has a lot on her hands because the following year, she will have her internship at a local hospital to be followed by an application for a 3 year residency program at an eastern medical center for her intensive internal medicine practice. She states that she aspires to have a full medical career. I foresee myself surpassing the usual 25 years which is said to be the extent of a doctor's career.
Her husband, back in 1964, after operating a 145 acre chicken ranch for 15 years, decided that he needed a career change and also recommended his wife to take on a job to sustain their family. An electronics instrumentation specialist is the job he got at the local research laboratory. The wife on the other hand attended school but also worked in a blood processing laboratory at her university to get some income.
While this lady shares about how everyone would come up and ask her about her situation, she guarantees them that she doesn't really have any difficulties with being a mother of many kids and a working student as well. Of course, we only scraped by and struggled so much with managing out money. But without me even asking for it, all of them pitched in. Bill, a remarkably helpful father and their kids truly contributed so much. I only took care of the dishes for I am not so much into cooking. It would be smooth sailing during times that I have to handle both the cooking and the dishes.
The lady got herself a nice 3 point 2 average in her premed program then got into biology as a part time graduate student as she coaxed the medical school to accept her. She shares her belief on how medical school changed not just her but their whole family too. For instance, the kids met an entire group of people, teachers and other medical students right in the comfort of their home. They got to meet tons of exceptional individuals from all walks of life who all taught them to respect people no matter where they come from.
My daughter, one of them, was asked how it feels to have a mom who was absent most of the time. She retorted that she perceived her as another person and not just a parent. Only two children now remain at home. And these two ones are their youngest boys, a 14 year old who is still in junior high while the other is 17 and has recently graduated from high school. But they know that their 29 year old son who is also the eldest can easily see them as he lives within the area and manages his own motor parts store. She reveals her secret of success as a doctor and this is simply learning to accept the role of a physician while keeping her womanhood close. This successful woman saw it as a matter of personal growth and the importance of fulfilling a duty.
