subject: Liposuction Preparation Tips: Know What Habits To Break Before Surgery [print this page]

If you are ready to get rid of excess flab that will not go away on its own, you may be considering liposuction. Before you make a final decision, you should know how to prepare before the day of surgery. Once you choose a doctor, you can expect to have an initial consultation, during which time your questions should be answered. However, having an idea of how to prepare for the operation before then is helpful.

You can expect your surgeon to go over the procedure with you so that you have an idea of how it works. He or she will also explain the benefits, risks, and likely side effects during the recovery period. You will probably also be scheduled for a medical exam to make sure you are in good health before you have liposuction performed. Your doctor should ask what medications you are on, if any, and will advise you of which ones to stop before the procedure.

This is because some medications can complicate the surgery, and prevent a fast recovery period. For example, if you currently take the birth control pill, you will be asked to stop taking it before the procedure, since it can increase the risk of blood clots in the legs. Aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamins, anti-inflammatory drugs, and even some herbs should also be temporarily stopped for at least a week before the surgery. This is because they tend to thin the blood, which could result in complications, such as excessive bleeding.

Some other habits can affect the outcome of liposuction and should be stopped, as well. For example, now is the time to quit smoking, as most doctors will not even perform the procedure on those who still smoke. This is because it can reduce blood flow, resulting in circulatory problems and slower healing. Additionally, it can increase the possibility of chest infections after taking the anesthesia during the operation. Therefore, it is best to quit smoking at all if you want the best outcome possible.

Clearly, some people have a lot of preparing to do before they get liposuction. Of course, if you do not regularly practice any of the habits described above, you will have less preparation to do, but learning more about the surgery is always helpful. Once you know how to act prior to the operation, you can begin preparing for the recovery period, after which you can see the result you desire.
