subject: A Few Realistic Hints To Help You Sleep Without Drugs [print this page]

The stresses of daily life can impact how you sleep at night. Sometimes people can not let go of their days when it is time to fall asleep. If you are seeking new ways to sleep without drugs, there are a number of natural methods you can employ when your bedtime is near.

Have a soothing drink a little while before bedtime. This drink can be an herbal tea, such as chamomile. Or, try a glass of warm milk with a teaspoon of honey. Both of these examples will help relax away the stresses of the day!

If your mind seems to constantly be awake, consider journaling. This can help you clear your mind of any thoughts that may be preventing you from falling asleep. Writing away your stresses can help you achieve a restful sleep. This is because you are purging your mind of worrying thoughts. When your mind is at ease, your body can rest as well.

The next day's chores can be listed in a to-do list. When you write them down not only will you relieve yourself from thinking about them but you will also get the added bonus of being organized the next day. This means you will not forget to do anything! If other, more serious matters are troubling you, write down your thoughts. What's actually bothering you and how is it making you feel? Don't worry about your grammar, just write.

Take deep breaths. Inhale deeply and exhale. Think of relaxing thoughts and calming visions while breathing. This will help you relax and fall asleep. Do not break your breathing with distracting thoughts; push them out of your mind as they enter.

How much caffeine are you drinking? Too much? Well, drinking caffeine can seriously hinder your ability to get a calming sleep. Caffeine's effects on the body last for several hours. Try avoiding caffeine drinks after lunch. If you need an energy booster think about talking a walk outside. Fresh air can also help you feel energized.

Do you have an exercise routine? When are you doing your regular exercises? Try to incorporate your exercise in the morning. If you exercise during the late afternoon or evening this can cause you to stay awake at night, because of the stimulation exercise gives your system. Working out in the morning can help you fall asleep quicker, and have a better sleep throughout the night.

If you are napping during the afternoon and having a hard time sleeping at night, consider omitting your naps from your routine. This may be hard to stand in the beginning because your body may be tired. This usually fades away as you get yourself used to going through your days without a nap.

Much like young children, a routine and downtime before going to sleep can help you fall asleep quicker. For instance, a warm bath with scented oils can be relaxing for your mind and body. Turn down the lights in the evening making it a peaceful environment. Avoid loud conversations, eating or talking on the phone right before bed. Also incorporate consistency into your daily routine. Wake up at the same time each day, and go to sleep around the same time. All of these tips will help you sleep without drugs.
