subject: Does A College Degree Guarantee A Job? [print this page]

A few years ago, a college degree would guarantee you a good job. Things have changed though, and with unemployment at an all time high, there just aren't enough jobs to go around. Add the fact that the recession makes it harder for everyone to get by, and the question must be asked. Why should anyone attend college in this economy?

1. College life is a boot camp of sorts for the young adult. Waking up to get to classes, budgeting your time, and getting homework done prepares you for life after college. These are skills that aren't learned by reading a textbook.

2. Problem-solving skills can help you deal with any crisis that may come up in your life after college. These techniques come from tackling challenges head-on. After your school years, you'll find that many issues that arise won't require the assistance of an expert, but will force you to rely on your own determination and abilities.

3. Securing funding for college and paying off your loans can help you develop prudent financial habits. Even though it is a daunting debt to have on your mind, paying it off on time can go a long way toward establishing good credit. Once you're out on your own, you'll have to learn to pay bills and budget enough for expenses, so now is the best time to learn.

4. The friendships you form in college will be valuable to you throughout life. Through various campus clubs and extracurricular activities, you'll meet people who may become lifelong friends. In addition, you'll make alliances you can tap into in terms of business networking through the years.

5. The knowledge you've gained during your college years is portable, and all educational experiences enrich you. Regardless of whether you land a job or not, you've learned many interesting things in college, and that wisdom stays with you throughout your life.

Even though there is no longer any certainty about the job market, college life still has numerous advantages. With the help of college scholarships for which you might qualify, it could be time to take that step. You'll end up with valuable knowledge and lifelong friends, so now is the time to go for your dream and earn your college degree.
