subject: Cat Boarding Issues To Consider [print this page]

Are you a cat owner who is planning to go away for an extended period of time this coming holiday season? Ideally you will want a friend or family member to look after your beloved feline, but this isn't always possible or practical. Maybe you are considering cat boarding for the first time? If so, then this article will help you with some points to consider when evaluating cat boarding.

Cats more than most animals are very attached to their immediate surroundings and may suffer some distress when they are temporarily relocated. As a result, it is essential that you make as much effort as possible to make their boarding experience as pleasant as you can. We recommend that you visit a few cat boarding companies to compare the strengths and weaknesses of each and find the best one for your cat. Here are some areas to examine when you are evaluating cat boarding establishments:

Food and drink. Does the cat boarding facility provide food or can you supply your own? If they supply the food, ask for more details on the exact composition of the meals.

Shelter. Do the cats at the facility have adequate protection from the elements? Cat the cats get out of the cold, heat, wind and rain?

Recreation. Do the cats have enough indoor and outdoor space so that they won't feel completely penned in. Obviously they aren't going to have the run of the place, but do they have a reasonable amount of space?

Resident cats. Take a moment to look at a few of the residents of the cat boarding facility. Do they look happy and relaxed or agitated and stressed?

Staff members. Chat to a few of the staff there to gauge their attitudes towards the cats they look after. Do they seem caring and attentive or disinterested? Ask about what experience they have with cats and how much time they spend with the animals each day.

Health and hygiene. Ask about the facility's disinfection routine. Look at the cat litters and bowls of the resident cats. Ask about their policies and procedures for sick cats.

Inspections. Is the cat boarding company regularly inspected by an independent outside body to ensure that they provide a safe and healthy experience for the cats in their care?

Make sure that you look at several cat boarding companies before deciding on which one is right for your cat. Don't just head over to your nearest one and accept the service they offer. Some cat boarding facilities are better than others. If you can get a personal recommendation from a friend or your vet, then all the better.
