It should be mentioned firstly that it is similar to a ball valve which is used to stop or regulate flow. So does the operation. A butterfly valve is one kind of valves called quarter-turn valves. It is called as "butterfly valve" because the disc is just like a butterfly staying on a rod. And the disc is suggested as a significant part which is positioned in the center of the pipe. When the actuator is rotated, the disc is either parallel or perpendicular to the flow. Thus, the major deference between a ball valve and a butterfly valve occurs that the disc is always present within the flow, therefore a pressure drop is always induced in the flow, regardless of valve position. It is to say that when the valve is closed, the disc is turned so that it completely blocks off the passageway. When the valve is fully open, the disc is rotated a quarter turn so that it allows an almost unrestricted passage of the fluid. Also, the valve may also be opened incrementally to throttle flow.
There are many types of butterfly valves indeed holding their different pressures and usages, such as resilient butterfly valve, performance butterfly valve and tricentric butterfly valve. In the following, two types are given in details.
The wafer style butterfly valve is designed to maintain a seal against bi-directional pressure differential to prevent backflow in systems designed for unidirectional flow. And a lug- style valve is another common kind. The threaded inserts at both sides of the valve replace the system of using two sets of bolts and no nuts. The valve is installed between two flanges using a separate set of bolts for each flange. This setup permits either side of the piping system to be disconnected without disturbing the other side.
We can not ignore the specifications the butterfly valve holds. To make full use of it appears to be wise.
