subject: What To Know About Your Handyman [print this page] Ever hear of a handyman special? This terms refers to a house that is what they call a fixer upper. In other words, you will need a guy for the many fixes that this house requires. It may require some plumbing, electrical work, paint, floor tiles replaced, sheetrock, new lighting fixtures, some cleanup, and so forth.
For plumbing jobs especially, it may be much more cost effective to hire a worker like this. Plumbers have some overhead with their extensive equipment and equipped trucks. They sometimes even have a headquarters or office out of which they receive phone calls and may dispatch other plumbers to jobs, as well. For a simple leak coming from under the sink, or for the replacement of decorative fixtures, it should be much cheaper to hire a handyman.
If a job is more involved, however, a licensed plumber will probably be the better choice. It just depends on the job. You might also consider this with an electrician. If the job seems more complicated, you will want a licensed electrician, as well.
For a carpet installation job, you may have to ask yourself how professional you would like this to look. Chances are if your man owns a kicker, he knows how to correctly install your carpet. If not, you may want to re-think hiring him, and go for the professional carpet installer. A correctly installed carpet looks so nice when it is done right.
If you need your tub re-caulked, or a floor tile replaced, or pictures hung, your handy man can probably do these tasks rather effortlessly. For elderly people, a man can come to the rescue when it comes to just hanging new shower curtains, as it may be difficult or dangerous for them to stretch or step on a step ladder to do this. Or they may need a shelf hung on the wall.
You may need him in the garden before spring time. He can re-till the soil, or rake out the leaves. He can even plant for you, if you like. But he is not a landscaper, so make sure you know what soil amendments you would like him to add to each of your flowers and vegetables. And if you have a lawn mower, he can be used for this job, as well.
And if the price is right, he can be hired for many jobs that you will be able to afford. It will keep him busy and you happy. And you may very well refer him to your friends and neighbors. You can be sure that they will, at some point or another, need a reliable handyman, too.
