subject: Make Sure You Comply With Adr Regulations When Hauling Dangerous Goods [print this page]

There are ADR Regulations that you should comply with if you are involved in transporting dangerous goods. Your vehicles should always be prepared for any spills that are likely to happen during transport so that the driver, any passengers and the public are protected, and environmental damage is avoided. Carrying a specific ADR spill kit will help you to do this and make sure you are in compliance with ADR regulations.

It is also important that you understand the ADR regulations and that your drivers are aware of hazards arising from the carriage of dangerous goods and are able to take measures to limit the effects of an incident. Find out more about ADR regulations and how you can make sure you comply below:

What is ADR?

ADR addresses the safety of persons and the environment - arising from the dangerous intrinsic properties of the goods and/or the risks posed in transport - before, during and after carriage, as well as the safety of persons and the environment during loading/unloading of dangerous goods. So, if you are involved in transporting dangerous goods it is important to adhere to these regulations so that you are prepared to deal with unexpected hazardous and chemical spills.

The ADR legislation makes sure that if the dangerous goods that you are transporting spill you have the correct knowledge and equipment to deal with the spillage safely and efficiently. It protects not only the driver but also the public and the environment against the hazards presented by the transport of dangerous goods. Examples of dangerous goods mentioned in the ADR legislation are corrosive, flammable, toxic and explosive liquids, as well as radioactive materials.

How can you make sure you comply?

In the ADR Regulations Annex B: Provisions Concerning Transport, Equipment and Transport Operations, Part 8 Requirements for vehicle crews, equipment, operation and documentation, lays out criteria that the vehicle crew must meet and basic equipment that must be available on each vehicle. By knowing the criteria and having the equipment needed you can make sure that you are prepared for any potential spills and that you are in compliance. Some companies provide spill kits specific for ADR compliance which can also help you make sure you meet the ADR regulations effectively.

ADR Spill Kits

The ideal response to minor incidents is for each vehicle to carry an appropriate ADR Spill Response Kit which is specifically designed to comply with ADR regulations. ADR Spill Response Kits are made to fit easily into your vehicles with some on the market even including fixings brackets and kit so that the ADR Spill Kit is always in one known location. Spill kits typically include different absorbents such as mats, socks and pillows and some products to help with the safe disposal of used absorbents. ADR Spill Containment Kits also include these as well as at least one drain seal so that environmental damage can be avoided in an emergency spill situation; a requirement under the ADR regulations. The type of drain seal included in an ADR Spill Kit with differ from each supplier, some companies provide single use drain seals which can also temporarily seal leaking drums or tanks as well as drains.

By knowing and understanding the ADR Regulations, and making sure you have the correct equipment to deal with a hazardous spill, you can make sure that you are in compliance with ADR Regulations and are safely transporting dangerous goods
