Today, I read the lines from a great friend Obafemi:
"When an archer misses the mark he turns and looks for the fault with himself. Failure to hit the bull's eye is never the fault of the target".
Have you gone back to that pretty dusty note that opened 2010 for you? Do you have a smile or a big, big frown?
If you are frowning, do you think your goals were too audacious or do you think there were moments in 2010 when you missed it?
Well, to that question; you alone can answer in all sincerity.
But here we are, savouring the feel of the Christmas season and indeed the end of 2010; with the hope that it gives us the satisfaction and fulfilment we expected for 2010!
For some of us, it is a joyful feelingfor others it is a somewhat lukewarm feeling
But like the true Nigerian, let us not alow the "e go better" gospel go to rest without addressing the fact that this is actually a dependent statement; It will only be better when we address the issues that made it not so good for us!
A man cannot go to sleep after the death of his child when indeed the snake that bit the child is lurking at the corner
Soon, we would re-open the doors to our rituals of goal-settingprobably with hype for 2011. I want this, I want that and all the stories.
The critical question therefore is not "How will 2011 be better than 2010"it is "How can I make myself better for 2011!"
Confucius says: "The expectations of life depend upon diligence; the mechanic that would perfect his work must first sharpen his tools."
Abraham Maslow, the proponent of the Hierarchy of Needs puts it in plain facts: If you plan on being anything less than you are capable of being, you will probably be unhappy all the days of your life.
We all must build capacitycompetencewe must build ourselves!
Like the archer that Obafemi talks about; to improve your aim, improve yourself!
Ralph Marston gives us a balance: Don't lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality."
I certainly agree with that
2011 would surely be a great yearbut would you be ready when it comes with its windows of opportunity?
