No you probably won't see any of these in the Olympics any time soon, however they have a big following from country to country and pub to pub. The popularity of pub sports is derived not just from the fact you can play them at your local pub, but also the fact the beer consumption is by no means going to prevent you from becoming an elite competitor in your chosen sport.
Whilst everyone has heard of darts, there are some less well known pub sports which despite their relative anonymity are equally as competitive and have huge followings.
If you aren't familiar with these sports, here's a list which you may consider participating in one day at your local pub.
1. Foozball (Table Football)
Patented by Harold Searle in 1922, the game based on football (or soccer) involves trying to get the ball in the opponent's goal by spinning handles corresponding with players on the field. Quickly this became more than just a pub sport as by the 1940's official Foozball tournaments were held as well as a number of Foozball associations popping up around Europe.
In 1975, a professional Foozball league was created in America to coincide with the FIFA World Cup. Sponsored by Heineken, this league went onto award millions of dollars in prize money.
However If you think Foozball is just for the pub, then check this video out:
2. Devil Among The Tailors (Table Skittles)
This pub sport is very popular in regions of England. It involves a box of nine wooden pins which one tries to knock down with a ball attached to a string.
Players swing the ball in an arc in an effort to knock down as many pins as they can. Generally the skittles are arranged in a 3 x 3 square however there are a number of variations.
3. Bar Billiards
Popular in English Pubs, this sport is confusing as hell and I have no idea how it works. Anyways check out the video but I doubt you will see this in normal pubs any time soon.
