subject: Student Life In College: The Role Of Fraternities And Sororities [print this page]

What is student life like for those who are not college students yet? For high school students, college life is like another world, foreign realm, the land of unimagined pleasures, new meetings, and unknown emotions. Many high school seniors dream of entering a college and one of the most significant reasons for this burning desire to enter a college is to become a member of Greek society. The reason why they are called Greek is that their names always consist of several Greek letters, like, for instance, Sigma Pi Fraternity. There are separate Greek societies for males and for females; this is why the first are called fraternities while the second are called sororities.

The advantages and privileges of being a member of a fraternity

1.Friendship. The names of the organizations, fraternity and sorority can be interpreted as brotherhood and sisterhood. Thus, they prompt that the relationship among fraternity members is very close, very often, they are more than friends, they are like brothers, and they are one family. It is a perfect option to choose for a college student whose home town is far away, fraternity members can help a student to cope with homesickness, absence of friends and relatives.

2.Academic assistance. It is a well-known fact that the dropout rate is significantly lower among fraternity members in comparison with other students. If you have academic problems, your Greek brothers will always help you to catch up with the rest of your class as tutoring is developed in fraternities.

3.A great contribution to your resume. Do you know that in the majority of cases the candidates that used to be Greek-members are given preference when applying for a job? Thus, Greek membership is a plus to your resume especially if your employer is your college alumnus who used to be a member of Greek society.

4.Community work. Employers also value Greek membership of the candidates as fraternities are active participants of community life. They often participate in such noble activity as raising money for charity.

5.The last but not the least strong point of fraternities is fun. Is it necessary to add anything or are you going to see that with your own eyes?
