subject: The Randomness Of Social Media [print this page]

I know that sometimes you question the point in engaging with social media, particularly if you have not had your big win from it yet, but keep going as it will pay off in the end.

Certainly my offline life has been pretty random - getting jobs, meeting my wife Jo and making all my friends. All by chance encounters, all leading from one to another (eventually). Even my big client wins have come from knowing the right people or just happening to be in the right place at the right time. Chance.

As Steve Jobs famously said in his Stanford speech - you can only join the dots looking backwards. Have a look at this http://bit.ly/8NHSCE

My point is, social media works in exactly this way as life. Social media is all about randomness. When you send a tweet from your coffee shop whilst you are waiting for your meeting to turn-up (as I am writing this), who knows who will read it, perhaps they will join you there for a chat, perhaps they will work with you or even marry you!

You just do not know.

What I do know, for certain, is that if you do not embrace the randomness of social media, if you do not use it in real-time, if you do not use it as often as you can you are missing the greatest of opportunities.

Who knows when your big break will come, but if you are out there, come it will.
