subject: Finding A Niche Market For Affiliates [print this page]

People who are new to affiliate marketing sometimes do not know where to start. The basics of affiliate marketing begin with choosing a product to market. Products can be chosen by ones that you particularly like or buy yourself. They can also be products you are completely unfamiliar with using.

Before you even begin choosing products to sell, you will want to target an audience and this is similarly called finding a niche market. One of the definitions of a niche is a distinctive segment of a market. It is also further defined as a place or position suitable or appropriate for a person or thing such as a niche market for your business.

Finding a niche market can be easily done by searching as a consumer would do for the items you are selling. Notice where the items come up on the search. It is the people searching for them who become your target market. For example if you were wanting to promote an item for motorcycles you might target a specific niche of people who like motorcycles. To target that niche you want to go to the places online that motorcycle enthusiasts would gather such as Harley Davidson forums, websites or event pages.

By involving yourself in discussions on these forums, fan pages, etc., you can quickly begin gathering a following of people who are distinctively targeted for your particular item. These people can be directed to your website and links through your blogs, articles and forum discussions. If you have an optin on your page to gather names and emails then you will have a target audience for marketing more of your products by using your list. You can also search on the main search engines for what people are looking for by extracting keywords from your search and using those keywords in your articles, blogs and social forums.

Knowing what your target audience is searching and talking about can further define your market and products to promote for optimum profitability. When a niche does not work out for you, there is no need to despair. A niche can be changed at any time. If you find it is not profitable, then make some adjustments or target a different audience and see if the results change.

Someone so wisely said "go ahead and choose a niche because you will probably change it anyway." You need a niche to get started in your business and that niche can be changed at any time. The important thing in affiliate marketing is to get started with finding a niche market, and this will get you well on your way to marketing a particular product to a targeted group of people.
