Drivers have been warned this month to keep an eye on their tyre pressure levels, as not to waste their money on fuel. Tyre maker Michelin carried out research in 2009 which found out that three hundred and seventy million litres of fuel a year could be saved if drivers kept their tyre pressure at the recommended level for their vehicle. This is equivalent to four hundred and forty million pounds, but is more likely to be much higher than this, as the figure is only accounting for lost fuel and not considering additional wear on tyres or other factors. Correct tyre pressure can not only help to save you money on fuel, but it will extend the life of your tyre and improve your vehicle safety. The tyre manufacturer will stipulate the correct pressure for your tyres, in relation to your vehicle.
Tyres that are underinflated are prone to overheating, and tyres that are under inflated can lead to poor vehicle handling when you are driving. Correct tyre pressures will also help to maintain optimum fuel efficiency, and therefore help the environment, as this will cause the car to give lower fuel emissions.
This year, Michelin is hitting the road with their fill up with air campaign, which offers free tyre checks to drivers, to encourage people to get their vehicles checked. This is visiting fifty locations across the country from May to December.
