Three-piece Smokeless Cigarettes
The three-piece design was the original configuration of the first vapor cigarette patent for electronic smoking. It consisted of a cartridge, an atomizer and a battery.

The cartridge holds the nicotine eliquid. It is stuffed with a heat resistant filling such as polyester to absorb the electronic cigarette liquid. The atomizer touches the wet filling causing the nicotine eliquid to be vaporized and inhaled.
A Cartridge is fifty percent cheaper than a cartomizer however each atomizer is approximately ten dollars.

Atomizer
After refilling your cartridges a few times you may notice a diminishing amount of vapor. This may be due to the atomizer getting clogged up with residue from the electronic cigarette liquid. Remove the atomizer and rinse it with running water. Let it dry on a paper towel for several hours. When you reassemble the vapor cigarette it will take several draws for it to function properly as the wick has to absorb the nicotine eliquid again. Keep the battery connector end dry as it will cause the pressure switch in the cigarette battery to malfunction.
Two Piece Smokeless Cigarettes
An advancement was made with smokeless cigarettes in developing an economical atomizer that could be included and enclosed in each cartridge. The combined unit became a cartomizer. This eliminated the problem of electronic cigarette liquid leakage of improperly filling the cartridge with nicotine eliquid. It also eliminated the deterioration problem of overusing the atomizer.
