New Year's Dating Advice - Six More Dating Blunders Made by Men

Men are the champions when it comes to making foolish mistakes when dating women.

My previous articles discussed five of the worst blunders guys commit on their first dates. Now I am going to illuminate you dullards with another shopping list of dating disasters committed by men in great need of a helping hand with some good dating tips for men.

Being Needy. This is a huge turn off for women these days. They are used to portrayals in popular culture of manly men, not molly-coddled cry babies desperate for attention and cuddles. It is also something genetically programmed into the female side of the species. Of course, this is not knocking equality in every way in a civilized society. Not at all. However, recent social studies are showing that the preening, waxing, self-absorbed male is being turned away in favor of the hairy-chested, masculine variety of the male gender. This is bad and uncomfortable news for the guys out there too much in touch with their feminine side (where is that, actually? Under your man boobs, dude?). So, man up, and stop acting like a lack of attention will cause you to turn into a blob of jelly. If this isn't your style, go back to your mama!

Talking about Himself. Please, you must focus all of your attention on your date - as much as is bearable. No woman likes a self-absorbed man who talks incessantly about his achievements (real or imagined), how much money he makes, how many friends he has and so on. On the other hand, if your lady exhibits tendencies of verbal diarrhea, get the hell out of there. I've been stuck with these motor-mouth women, and they are a complete pain in the behind. If you happen to land a date with one of these chatter boxes, pretend you are ill and catch the next taxi home. But, in general, it's best to allocate about 30% of the conversation time to your contribution, and about 70% to her. Seems unfair, I know, but believe me, it's safer this way - and more likely to lead to some first-date romance.

Mentioning Previous Partners. This is a very widespread practice among guys, especially those who have been out of the dating scene for a while and are finding their feet again. Please, fellas, do your best to forget past associations/wives/lovers and you will be doing yourself a huge favor. Sometimes it takes only one mention of a past woman to completely destroy your chances with a new date.

Too Much Sports Talk. Unless your date is an athlete, do your best to avoid this topic. However, if she initiates it and you are a sports fan, this can be a relief like nothing else. It will give you plenty to talk about with fewer awkward silences. Best dating tip in this regard: mention that you are a sporty guy and watch the expression on her face. If she immediately looks like she just sucked a lemon, switch subject without haste. If there is no change of expression, or even better, the hint of a crinkled smile, you are in clover, buddy!

Too Much Car Talk. See above!

You may have to bone up on happenings on the popular soap operas if you are desperate for a conversation topic. Other safe topics: shoes, dresses, romantic comedies.

Being Jealous of Her Previous Boyfriends. Remember I told you not to mention your past women? Well, it's quite possible your date will talk about previous men in her life. Double standards, I know, but in this case you just have to bite your lip and put up with it. Sorry about that.

If it's too much to bear, get the hell out of there and meet up with your buddies at a bar for a few beers. Much more fun, I guarantee it!
