subject: How To Properly Maintain A Swimming Pool [print this page]

Having a swimming pool in the backyard is fun and relaxing way to enjoy the summer. When people have a swimming pool as part of their home, however, they must also be prepared to take the time and effort to properly maintain the pool in order to prevent damage and to ensure that the water stays safe for swimming.

To properly maintain a swimming pool, a person needs to first sanitize the water by using a stabilized chlorine product. Chlorine products usually come in sticks or tablets and are added to a distribution container next to the pump and filter system. The chlorine will provide the needed protection against bacteria in the water, but people should be sure not to add too much chlorine, which can be damaging to health. Most chlorine product will come with instructions on how much chlorine should be added to the pool.

Pool owners should also periodically add an algae preventative in order to inhibit algae from growing in the pool. Algae is not only unseemly, but it can also make the water dangerous and unhealthy. Algae preventative is usually a liquid that should be poured straight into the water near the skimmer.

Every once in a while, shocking the pool water is also necessary in order to further prevent the spreading of algae and to remove any organic compounds present in the water. These organic compounds can irritate swimmers and prevent chlorine from efficiently sanitizing the water. To shock a pool, a person simply adds an extra amount of chlorine to the water and gives it time to remove the organic compounds before swimming again.

Although most of these pool maintenance steps can be performed by the pool owners, most people should hire a pool professional who has access to a water test facility to analyze water samples about once a year. A computer analysis of pool water will help ensure that the water is safe for swimming and will detect any problems that need to be addressed.

By following these steps to properly maintain a swimming a pool, people can prevent pool damage and keep the water clean. And in addition to these steps, people should also periodically clean the pool of debris. Having a swimming pool is a valuable asset to any home and provides a way for people to relax and have fun during the warm summer months. And by properly maintaining the pool, people can safely enjoy the water for a longer period of time.
