subject: Utilizing Safety Features In The Car [print this page]

When you get into your car to drive every morning you probably do not take the time to think about all of the safety features within your car.In today's day and age cars are very well equipped with safety features.

You should feel very safe when you are driving if your car is equipped with the safety features. Knowing what your car is equipped with and how you can best take care of them is important and should be an integral part of your car maintenance.

The first safety feature that most people know about is the air bag.Air bags are common place in the cars that we drive today and if you are in an accident they will be one of the most protective features if you get into car accident.

The air bag will deploy on contact and the point of the airbag is to keep the driver and the passenger from hitting their head or their face on any of the interior features of the car. The airbags will deploy only a fraction of a second after contact.

The airbags are useful and will be automatically utilized if you are ever in a car accident. You have much more control over other safety features in your car.

Your seat-belt, for example, will only be effective if you use it properly. You should be putting your seat belt on every time that you sit in your car and start it.

Wearing your seat-belt is of the utmost importance. You should always have your seat-belt buckled properly.

The shoulder strap on your seat-belt should be properly placed across your chest. Some people will wear a seat-belt and only put the lap strap across their lap.

Although this is better than nothing, if you get in a car accident your torso will easily be thrown into the direction of the impact. This can do permanent damage to your neck, back and even head.

If you wear the belt across your chest you will be much more likely to stay secure upon impact.Although your seat-belt may be uncomfortable you should always make sure that it is securely in place before you begin driving.

Anti-lock brakes are another safety feature that has become very common in today's cars. When you brake quickly in an emergency it is not uncommon for your breaks to lock up.

When your brakes lock up your car will usually begin to start skidding. The anti-lock brake system was developed to prevent the skidding.

This system works by sensing when your breaks begin to lock.As soon as the brakes begin to lock the cars automated system takes over and pumps the break at a specific pace.

This allows you to gain control of your car and avoid the danger of what you were braking for.To make sure that your anti-brake system is kept up you should have a maintenance company look at the braking system.

If you are able to have a brake system with that has a properly working anti-braking back up installed you will be much safer on the road. Take the time to understand what safety systems your car has installed and what would be plausible to have installed.

Crumple zones are a fairly new technology that is highly underrated. Many of today's cars have been made so that they will crumple in a designated way upon impact.

In making a car that crumples in a certain way, the car companies have made it so the car absorbs a large portion of the impact. This means that those who are inside of the car will not experience the full impact of a collision.

The crumple zone stays outside of the passenger compartment and once the impact reaches this part of the car the crumple zone ends. These systems are important in keeping passengers safe in any type of collision.

We also have control over how safe we want our windshield to be.This may sound odd because there are not a lot of people that think about the windshield on a car as a safety feature.

Your windshield protects you from the outside elements as you are driving. The windshield protects you from the small minute things such as dirt and dust flying into your eyes as you are driving to the larger objects.

You have to keep your windshield in good condition if you expect it to do its job properly. This means you should make sure to get all cracks and nicks in your windshield taken care of as soon as possible.
