As Mr. Dix tells his tragic story you see it all unfold again in a flashback, and still you can't believe that anything so preposterously unmotivated could ever have taken place even in "Reno," which is the title of the picture, incidentally. From beginning to end it is compounded of the sheerest twaddle, and the word "sheerest," in this case, may be taken to mean superlatively transparent. Santa left it at Loew's Criterion, the old rascal.
The Tolstoian story of Burratino, a surprisingly sweet-mannered Pinocchio with a Red nose, is the inspiration for "The Golden Key," a Soviet fantasy compounded of people and puppets, now showing at the Cameo. It is not a picture which can compare, either in charm or in fanciful inventiveness, with the work being done by our own animated cartoonists; it is not even in a class with Director Alexander Ptushko's earlier puppet creation, "The New Gulliver." But, considering some of the less gentle things which have been coming out of Russia lately, it is certainly to be commended for the docile note it strikes this Christmas season.
A program note states that the story is a post-Revolution version of the old Italian children's fable as told by Tolstoy to the Moscow kiddies. However that may be, it is difficult to read any ideology into it or out of it until toward the end. As was the original case, the film tells of a little wooden boy, carved by a destitute organ-grinder, who gets into all kinds of mischief, mixes up with a traveling puppet troupe, runs a gantlet of evil oppressors and finally snitches a golden key away from the wicked puppet master. With this miraculous key, the boy and the old organ-grinder open a secret door, discover a wonderful book andas the oppressors descendcall forth from it a magical Maxfield Parrish ship. Into this ship, which is manned by a crew of obviously Soviet Arctic fliers, the little people climb and sail away, singing something about
"To a land without griew we are hieing,
To a distant and happy abode"
