subject: Hair Clippers - Buying Guide [print this page] I've worn my hair clipped short for many years, and for a long time I would visit a hair salon to have a trim every couple of weeks. I realised however that was costing my hundreds of dollars each year, not to mention the time, so I invested in a pair of my own clippers and never looked back.
After going through several sets of clippers I eventually invested in a quality set from Wahl and wished I had done my research a little better in the beginning instead of buying the first set I found. Hopefully after reading this article you won't make the same mistake I did.
Let's take a look at what you should be looking out for:
Wet and dry use. Many modern clippers can be used on both wet and dry hair which makes them highly versatile. In fact, some cordless clippers can be washed in water, and can even be used in the shower!
High quality blades. Decent blades, which you'll find on clippers from the big brands, can make the difference between a clean and smooth cut, and frustration and pulling!
Quality motor. A good quality motor not only gives an accurate cut without jamming or pulling, but will also tend to be quiet and reasonably vibration free.
Accessories. Most clippers will come with various grade guards, and some will also come with extras like combs, brushes and other accessories. Don't be drawn in by these though, they should only be considered as free extras, while the blade and motor should be your main consideration.
Rechargeable. While mains powered clippers are powerful and reliable, a cordless set is much more convenient, and can be taken away on holidays or used in the garden. Some cordless clippers can also be used in the shower, but check the instructions first!
