subject: Going Green Is More Than Trendy [print this page]

There has been a large movement over the last decade or so to do what is often referred to as "going green". While this may seem like a trendy term at this point, it is a lot more than just that.

"Going green" is about making choices and implementing things that will help reduce the use of the earth's resources. Many people see the resources as a limited supply and they are worried that we will deplete these resources to a point that they will not be able to last for generations to come.

There are many things that can be done to reduce our use of natural resources. One of the most well known things that everyone can do is to recycle. Recycling can save a lot of resources because we are able to reuse the same natural resource over and over and over. Another benefit to using recycling is that the products that cannot be broken down in the earth and cause problems for us are not used as much and we are not trying to dispose of them and the problems with this kind of material go down significantly pretty quickly.

Another thing that can be done is to use solar power. We are all familiar with solar power in things like a calculator. However, some places in the country have enough sun to make it possible to power a whole house using solar power.

The costs to run a home using solar power are generally cheaper than the traditional home. However, getting a home set up and ready to run off of solar power can be rather expensive. That is still one of the biggest hurdles to more people getting solar power into their homes.

Some people are not as convinced of the need to change the way that we use the resources of this earth. These people are generally older in age and tend to have come from a background that is a very old school type of thinking. These people are generally considered by others as ignorant. Interestingly, these people consider those who are into the environmental movement as "Yuppies". Neither side understands the other. However, if this environmental movement is going to continue to grow in supporters these two groups of people will need to come together and find a way to get along and to understand each other. They will need to get this figured out in order to move ahead.
