College Baseball Scholarship and Recruitment Video Production

Your player video is a fantastic way to demonstrate in an engaging fashion all of the skills and talents you have worked so hard to develop in your baseball career until now. One of the greatest benefits of the

video, in the eyes of college coaches is the fact that the coach can watch you play on his computer without ever leaving his office. It is important for you to create a well orchestrated video that has been edited properly. If you send a college coach a video of the all star game that you played in two years ago, filmed by your mom on a shaky vhs camera then chances are that the coach is not going to watch the video for very long and that the video along with your player profile and your chances of playing for his team will all wind up in the wastebasket. Proper planning and diligent execution of a planned video will make sure that your video is not only seen by college coach but it will also help get you to the top of his recruitment list.

Step 1: Lights, Camera, Action

1) Film the video on a sunny day. The late afternoon and early morning are the ideal times for filming because the lighting will cause less glaring and a clearer picture.

2) Use a tripod. There is nothing worse than a shaky video. A tripod will even allow you to film the video yourself if you are short on people to help you out.

3) Take your time. Remember, the video does not have to be filmed in one day. It may take a few sessions to get all of the proper shots that you need.

4) Wear a clean, pressed baseball uniform. No college coach wants to see you rounding the bases in your grass stained sweats, no matter how good you are. Your image does matter. You may even want to consider getting a hair cut if it's been a while.

Step 2: The video introduction. Before you film the action sequences you should stand in front of the camera, in uniform, and introduce yourself. Include the following information in your introduction.

1) Your name and the high school you attend.

2) Your year of graduation

3) You academic achievements

4) Why you want to play college baseball

Step 3: Editing...The Cutting Room Floor

1) In Hollywood they say that "editing is everything" and the same concept holds true for the production of your promotional video.

2) Edit out all of the "dead air time". Don't include sequences of you walking out to the mound if you are a pitcher. Don't include images of practice swings.

3) Timing is everything. Limit your video to a running time of 5 minutes. Anything longer will bore the college coach. Remember, you need to grab his attention in as short a period of time as possible. Would you want to watch a boring commercial for more than 5 minutes? Probably not. Try to make the video as interesting and action packed as possible.

4) You are the star of your movie. Make yourself shine. Only include examples of your best performances.

Step 4: Promotion

Producing your video is just the first step in the right direction. After the video has been produced you need to begin promoting it. When Steven Spielberg makes a movie he already has his distribution channels marketing and selling it before it is even ready for release. Unfortunately, you don't have this luxury. You have to use some guerilla marketing tactics to get your video in the hands of the people who need to see it.

1) The Internet -- Post your video to as many online sites as possible. You never know who is going to see it. Make sure that you are using name as a keyword when you are leaving tags on websites such as Youtube.com. The tags allow your videos to show up in the search results when somebody googles your name.

2) Make at least 50 copies of your player promotional video. There are websites online that will duplicate the video for you. You can also create customized, full color labels for your cd rom. You won't be recruited based solely on the "look and feel" of your player video and its' packaging or design but details do matter. Coaches are looking for players who take their college baseball seriously and when you take the extra time to produce a well made player video it speaks volumes to the college coach who is looking at it.
