Think of words as having a certain weight. There are heavy words and there are light words. Heavy words tend to leave a negative impression on you. They can even make you feel sick in the stomach. Like that heavy meal that you had last night, which you are still paying for! Whoever said: "sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt you" was in total denial. They were living in fairy floss land!
I knew a person who would often offend others. Every time I asked them: "Don't you think that was a bit harsh!" they would reply: "Yeah, but it's the truth!"
Words can be either true or false, but here's an important distinction: they can also be either useful or harmful! They can either make you feel powerful or feel like you are the victim.
The good book reminds us to "speak the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15) This means that our words must not only be true, but also uplifting!
I guess mum was right when she reminded us that "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."
