subject: Tips For A Smooth Road Trip [print this page] Millions of North American families take road trips every summer. Whether you're driving across the country or just to the next province or state, here are a few tips to keep everyone sane, safe and happy on the road.
1. If you're traveling with kids you'll want to bring lots of things to keep them entertained in the car. Crayons and coloring books, books on tape, a portable DVD player and travel games will help keep boredom at bay.
2. Eat on the cheap. Bringing a cooler with lots of sandwiches, drinks, snacks and fruit is a great way to save money. Rather than stopping at expensive restaurants and drive-throughs, have a picnic at a rest stop or a park along your way. You'll eat healthier, get some fresh air and the kids can play outside for a bit before hitting the road again.
3. Choose hotels for the extras. The cheapest hotels aren't always the best choice. Paying a little more for the added bonuses sometimes makes sense. Look for Internet access, free breakfast, pools, and shuttles to nearby attractions.
4. Camping along your way is much cheaper (or free) and a whole lot of fun too. Look for campgrounds along your trip, or pull off and tent on public land. You'll save a ton of money and it's a fun way to bond as a family too
5. Save on gas. The more weight there is in your car the more gas you'll use. Pack as light as possible and use the trunk rather than a roof rack. Using the air conditioning uses more fuel too, so turn off the AC and open the windows for some fresh air. Keep your tires inflated to the recommended PSI and keep below the speed limit to save on gas too.
These few trips should help you to save money and sanity on a family road trip this summer.
