It has been said that there is nothing quite like the Low Country, and visitors to seem to agree. This city is steeped in history and full of southern hospitality to make anyone who chooses Charleston vacation rentals feel instantly at home. The city also offers a remarkable variety of housing in several different locations from beachfront to the city's heart. Sullivan's Island rentals are available throughout, but vary in style and decor so widely that two are rarely alike,

Beautiful Beachfront Rentals

One of the most noteworthy features of the Low Country's most well known city is the number of different areas that are close to the Charleston. One of these places is Sullivan's Island, which is a short distance from the city, yet can offer oceanfront island rentals. Charleston vacation rentals as well as Sullivan's Island rentals can be found within many varied areas, including within some of the historic buildings. Even when the buildings themselves are not historic, old town charm is never hard to find.

Charleston & Sullivan's Island's Historical Hotspots

Whether a visitor chooses Charleston vacation rentals or Sullivan's Island rentals, the vacationer will be center stage to cultural history, beauty and adornment. A key historical location in Charleston is the Market Hall and Sheds, more commonly known as the Market. Built in the 1830s, this area is known for its boutique shops, many of them in outdoor open-air settings. This place has a very strong historical feeling about it, highlighted by the Museum of the Confederacy that is housed within it.

When staying at the many Sullivan's Island rentals, the historic Fort Moultrie built in the late 1700s, is just a short trip away. Fort Moultrie is a series of fortresses on the island, originally built to protect Charleston and the surrounding areas. Previously known as Fort Sullivan, Fort Moultrie encountered many battles over the course of U.S. history. Visitors travel back in time from the World War II Harbor Entrance Control Post to the site of the Palmetto-log fort. Fort Moultrie remains today as an example of the rich military history of the town.

Historic Homes Close To Sullivan's Island And Charleston Vacation Rentals

Because Sullivan's Island created an ordinance to preserve their historic district, several homes still remain on the island today. The district includes twenty single-family residences that were built for officers in the Army around the 1900s. The largest and most elaborate home was the Base Commander's Quarters. Other houses were for Senior and Junior Officers. Sullivan's Island also has many non-military historically single-family residences which are often referred to as "Island Houses." Every home conveys the island's diverse architectural design.

Charleston offers an incredible variety of historical homes available to tour throughout the city. They are often surprisingly accessible and stunningly beautiful, and always make a traveler feel closer to history. The first of these is the Nathaniel Russell House. A model of Federal style, it can be easily found downtown. It is a national historical landmark, and remains operated as a museum today. The inside of the home is uniquely beautiful, with such elegant features as an elliptical spiral staircase and ornamental mantles. Some historians consider the home to be the finest exemplification of the American Federal style to date.

Built in 1820 for the father of future governor William Aiken, the Gov. William Aiken House (also known as the Aiken-Rhett or Robinson-Aiken House) is another beautiful residence. Found close to many Charleston vacation rentals, this property is well maintained and quite beautiful. Tours are organized by the Historic Charleston Foundation, which also owns and operates the Nathaniel Russell House discussed above. Charleston also offers many mansion tours to make sure visitors get to see it all.
