Pavin Named Us Ryder Cup Captain

Corey Pavin has been named as the United States captain for the Ryder Cup for 2010. The 2010 contest will be held at Celtic Manor in Wales.

The tournament is one of the main competitions which professionals want to play in due to the United States and Europe rivalry. The competition first took place in 1927 and since has been the tournament to play in.

The Ryder Cup Matches involve various match play competitions between players selected from two teams of twelve. The matches consist of eight foursomes matches, eight fourball matches and twelve singles matches. The winner of each match scores a point for their team with a point each for any match that is ties after 18 holes.

The Ryder Cup has seen some of the biggest names in golf: Seve Ballesteros, Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Arnold Palmer, Tony Jacklin and Jack Nicklaus.
Pavin Named Us Ryder Cup Captain

Corey Pavin was named as the United States Ryder Cup captain yesterday. The 49 year old is a former US Open champion. He takes the captaincy position of Paul Azinger who led the team to a 16 - 11 victory over Europe at Valhalla in September.

Pavin was extremely emotional when he was named captain as he said, "The Ryder Cup is in my blood. It is the greatest event in the world, certainly in golf."

The United States have not had much success with victories in Europe since the Belfry in 1993. Pavin appeared in this as a player and was an integral part of the team. Pavin is not shy of captaincy as he was vice captain to Tom Lehman at the K club in Ireland two years ago when the US lost 18 - 9 1/2.

There was some dispute when Azinger said that he will no longer be Ryder Cup captain and many of the US players tried to persuade him to carry on the role. Pavin has a lot to live up to and is under a large amount of pressure for 2010.

Pavin's Ryder Cup debut was at Kiawah Island in 1991. He made a lot of controversy when he joined Steve Pate in wearing a "desert storm" cap during a match that became so heated it was known as "the war on the shore."

Europe are yet to name their captain for the 2010 tournament. There has been a lot of speculation over who it will be and some of the names are; Jose Maria Olazabal, Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie. However the favourite is Ian Woosnam for the captaincy. Woosnam has already been captain and has had a Ryder Cup success.

Ian Woosnam is certainly the number one for the Ryder Cup captaincy. He recently won the European Order of Merit Seniors and signed with Forgan UK. Sports PLC certainly think Ian Woosnam would guarantee a win at Celtic Manor 2010.
