When we say "We are JewishDetroit," this is what we achieve in Israel:
Our extended Jewish family in Israel, and around the world, also depends on us, and we will be there for them too.
One out of every three children in Israel, below the age of 18, is living below the poverty line. Education is the key to breaking the cycle. Our overseas allocation funds school based programs that assist over 1,500 children annually to succeed in school and break their family's cycle of poverty.
Detroit's involvement in the Central Galilee has resulted in systemic change and a new network of Israeli volunteers. Last year Israeli volunteers in the Region raised over $600,000 towards projects to benefit area residents, and strengthen their Jewish identities and connection to the global Jewish world.
Federation's overseas allocation supports food purchases, home heating, medicines and medical supplies for 159,000 Jewish elderly living in the former Soviet Union, who would otherwise be forced to choose between their basic living needs and their health care.
The Israel & Overseas Department has lots of upcoming opportunities for you to travel to Israel with local groups: the Spirituality Retreat coming up in March, Community Birthright trips in May and August, and the Teen Mission and OASIS Study Abroad in July.
