There are a number of steps that we all need to take in order to think about becoming more mobile and if we are ever going to be able to drive that used Vauxhall Corsa, Birmingham or anywhere else within the UK would be fun to explore or take a road trip too.
The first step is to think about purchasing your Provisional License. Fill in a form from the local post office and send off to the DVLA. All you need is a passport photograph and a cheque for a small sum of 25.00.
Next up, go through the Yellow pages or speak to friends and family about who they drove with. I have had three driving instructors and this third one is great, whilst researching and choosing an instructor I was not bothered by price, I wanted the recommendations from drivers who are all accomplished, safe, drivers and obviously with LICENSES. So yes, he did his job well if they all passed. Book a lesson or two and see how you get on with the driver. If you do not get on with him on a teaching capacity you will not pass so find someone else.
Your instructor (if he is good) will tell you that you need to book and take your theory test. I booked mine online using the DVLA website and have bought the test dvds, borrowed another one, have a comprehensive book, and flash cards to help me pass. There are two sections to the theory test, one being the multiple choice test and the other being Hazard perception. Prepare, practise, learn it, take notice and ask questions.
Once the theory test has been taken and a few months has passed, you will have noticed that your driving has improved and your confidence grown. This is a good time to experience driving without the dual controls, but obviously with a driver that has had their license for more than 3 years. Dont confuse the two though. When out with your instructor, he will teach and guide you, when out with your mum in her Vauxhall, take note of the situations and learn from them but don't do things the way she may do. Your instructor will help you pass your practical, your mum or friends may not if they teach you bad habits.
Next up is shopping around for a new or used car. Some choose to wait but others find now is the right time to at least look into it. A small first car is the way to go and there are so many on the market that are energy efficient too.
Then it's time to book the practical test. Your driving instructor will give you a number to call and a whole host of details required for booking. On the day also remember that you will need ID, proof of theory, your glasses if you need them and perhaps take some Kalms before hand to steady the nerves.
Once the hard part is over, and you have found the perfect used car dealers in Stafford, you can then go about sorting out the final documents. Register the car in your name, change your provisional license from green to pink and then make sure you have tax and insurance on the car.
Some people opt into PASS plus lessons which include 6 hours of driving on motorways, country lanes and gives you a small discount on your insurance too.
Once all this has been completed, you are good to go and absolutely free to drive anywhere you like, even up to Stafford and back if you wish.
