The operating system serves as a platform for all the applications to run. A laptop or a desktop is pretty much does not have any use if it does not have an operating system installed. Basically, the operating system lets the user interact with the hardware through software.

When it comes to differences, there are a lot of things to mention which differentiate laptops from desktops. The main difference of a laptop and a desktop is portability. You can bring a laptop almost anywhere your go unlike with desktops which are only stationary.

When it comes to sizes, laptops are pretty much smaller as compared to desktops. The internal components of a laptop are also smaller to those of a desktop. Everything in a laptop is smaller as compared to desktops. We can say that laptop computers are smaller version of desktop computers.

Since laptop computers can be brought to almost anywhere we want to bring it to, it needs to have a portable power supply and that is the battery. Laptop computers have batteries which enable the user to use it even if it is not plugged into an electric outlet.

Laptop computers also have built-in display unlike desktops wherein you still need to connect an output device. Laptops also have their own keyboards and touchpads.

When it comes to power or performance, desktops are more powerful. But when it comes to price, laptop computers are more expensive than desktop ones.
