Five of South Africas football stadiums will undergo major renovations for 2010: Soccer City and Ellis Park in Johannesburg, Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, the Royal Bafokeng stadium in Mafikeng in North West Province and Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein in the Free State.
New stadiums for the tournament have been built at Mbombela in Mpumalanga and in the Nelson Mandela Metro (encompassing Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape. Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane in Limpopo has being rebuilt, as has King Senzangakhona Stadium in Durban and Cape Towns Green Point stadium. Kings Park and Green Point stadium have become completely new multi-sport facilities, Green Point complete with a retractable dome to protect fans and players from the Capes unpredictable winter weather.
This will be the first time the World Cup football tournament has been hosted by an African nation. South Africa was given this honour after beating Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. 32 teams have qualified to play in the World Cup in South Africa. The teams have been split into 8 groups and they will play each team in their group during the first round of the tournament. England where landed a favourable Group Group C alongside USA, Algeria and Slovenia.
