subject: Getting A Rhinoplasty Done Without Surgery [print this page]

How a nose looks is very important to the overall attractiveness of one's face. Having an unsightly nose can cause self esteem and confidence issues. It can make the eye, mouth and chin areas look unappealing when seen in combination with the misshapen nose. A traditional rhinoplasty has been the only option until recently when physicians began implementing a non-surgical technique.

A traditional rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon in order to alter the shape and size of one's nose. It is performed in a hospital or outpatient clinic and requires the use of a general or local anesthetic. During the operation, the surgeon will alter, reposition and remove excess cartilage and tissue. It is made up of both bones in the upper portion and cartilage in the lower portion.

At times the bones must be broken in order to alter the shape and size. If bones are broken, there will be substantial pain which will require five to ten days worth of prescription pain medication. There will also be substantial swelling and bruising for one to six months although it will have subsided enough to allow the patient to go into public within three weeks. The full result of a traditional rhinoplasty will not be viewable for up to one or two years.

A non-surgical rhinoplasty is now an option for those who do not choose to have a major medical procedure performed. In this less invasive method, the physician will inject calcium hydroxylpatite into nose tissue in order to sculpt it into its new shape. Calcium hydroxylpatite is a bio-degradable substance which is absorbed by the body over time.

The injectible material forms a soft and flexible area that looks quite natural. With this substance, the physician is able to smooth out existing bumps and dips in order to create a sleek new look. The upside to the non-surgical method is lower cost, no down time for recovery, very little pain, and an immediate result. The calcium hydroxylpatite will last up to two years before being broken down and reabsorbed by the body.

If you'd like to alter and improve the appearance of your nose, it would be wise to make an appointment with a reputable plastic surgeon to discuss the treatment options of surgical vs. non-surgical rhinoplasty. One way or another, a new and improved look may be just around the corner.
