subject: Career Opportunities As A Teacher In The Uk [print this page]

Teaching is one of the most noble professions that one could choose. The hunt for one of these jobs however can be quite an ordeal. Using a website known as TES Connect to search the entire United Kingdom; only 7 matches turned up in the field of education. This is not to suggest that their are only 7 education jobs available in the country obviously, but it does show the difficulty associated with landing one of these jobs.

Some of the matches found on this site include a job as the Head of the College of Education at Cirencester College in Gloucestershire and a job as a tutor in teacher education in Manchester. The skill required for these different careers vary widely, as do the compensation levels. The salaries of the 7 matches found ranged from 24,000 pounds to 75,000 pounds.

It should be noted that recent action by parliament has placed a pay hike for teachers on hold for the time being. These pay hike freezes have not stopped many people from entering the field, in fact in the last year the number of people entering the field has increased by 34 percent. The reason for the increase is believed to be from the effects of the recession. People are running into fields like education in the hopes of more job security.

Some people have questions about the education profession, because at times it is a complex profession and can be very stressful. The current amount of teachers signed off with stress is quite high resulting in the opportunity for supply teaching throughout the UK. This option is certainly a good starting point for any teacher and may result in a full time position being offered.

With an influx in citizens looking for work due to the recession, many are wondering if they are too old to teach. While the individual schools make choices about retirement practices, there are many teachers who are well above the age of 50. As with any job, many want to know what the minimum income level is. In the United Kingdom the minimum a teacher can be paid is 20,627 pounds per year, and that number is 25,000 pounds for those teaching in inner London.

There are also opportunities within the independant and public schools as well as the state system. If you have a sporting background then this is always a great benefit as it is generally a requirement as there is often great focus on sports within the independant schools.

There are several Internet Job boards and Job sites available that focus on the sector of education and teaching.
