Merchant Navvy Careers in India

While there is unemployment prevailing in almost every sector in India, there is a huge shortage of trained individuals in Merchant Navvy. This gap between demand and supply of trained seafarer is growing rapidly and is expected to reach 27000 by the year 2015 than 10000 in 2008. Most of this imbalance is due to lack of knowledge and awareness about merchant navvy careers in India.

Merchant Navvy is no doubt an exciting and rewarding career option but only for those who need to give it their best. Starting small, it will take anyone 8 years at least to reach at the helm of this career ride. Here is some step by step rout map to help you know how to reach there.

Initial Qualification To start your career in Merchant Navvy you need to receive formal training at any recognized marine career training centre or institute. The incumbent should have passed his 10+2 examination from any recognized board of education, in Physics + Chemistry + Maths (PCM) discipline, with aggregate 55% marks. The candidate should not be above 25 years of age. There is an age-waver of 2 years for female candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates though. The candidate should be medically fit according to Merchant Shipping Medical Examination Rules. The candidate need to satisfy 6/6 normal eye sight and normal colour vision. The final eyesight test will be conducted by Mercantile Marine Department.

The Course To start with, one can join a marine training institute for one year's pre-sea DNS (Diploma in Nautical Science) diploma course. After successful completion of this diploma the candidate is inducted for board ship training for a period of one and half year. The candidate, after successful completion of on-board training, is awarded Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science (ADNS) certificate.

Medium of Instruction The training programs are conducted in English language only.

Earning Prospects Those who can successfully adjust themselves with the marine life have rewarding income prospects at their disposal. The incumbents are paid attractive stipend during training time. It can be anything from USD400 to USD600 per month i.e. approx Rs.20,000 to Rs.30,000 per month. The candidates are paid tax-free salary in US dollars. If candidate has joined early, one can become Captain of the Ship (the highest rank) within eight years of time span i.e. by the age of 28-32 years and earn as much as USD 9000 to USD 16000 per month which becomes approx Rs.4.5 Lakhs to Rs.8 Lakhs per month. The other non monetary benefits include a chance to visit different places around the globe, family insurance, family carriage facility, easy education loan for further study, etc. These all and more make Merchant Navvy a bright career option.
