subject: Step By Step...teach Puppy Stay Command! [print this page]

When you teach the command, puppy stay, you should always consider a few things before you begin. The puppy stay command should be taught when the puppy is younger due to the fact that puppies absorb more information while there younger, much like children do.

When starting off teaching the puppy stay command, find a room to practice, otherwise free from any possible future distractions. It is easier if your puppy has already be taught how to sit, but it is not necessary. It is just that, this command is so simple, that the dog actually may find it difficult.

Use your open palm by putting it in the dogs face as you verbally teach and say... puppy stay! It is very helpful if you do this step each and every time you practice this. Consistency seems to be very helpful in teaching not only puppy stay, but in any other kind of dog command. But only keep your hand in his face for one or maybe two seconds before you stop and congratulate him on a job well done.

When learning puppy stay you will begin trying to increase your dogs time in stay position by slowly moving away from your puppy with each time before congratulating him. Make sure to do this with each puppy stay command.

I wanted to include a link to a free video on a dog training lesson, it may be more useful to you and it is certainly worth checking out. I am sure you will find this to be extremely rewarding if you simply just practice this. Remember that all dogs learn at there own pace, so do not stress if it takes your dog longer then you had hoped for. You dog will pick it up in no time, just keep at it.
