subject: Is Custom Lasik Better Than Traditional Lasik? Compare The Two Procedures [print this page]

New technology allows us to continue to improve the way we do things. Traditional LASIK eye surgery has given us the ability to improve a persons ability to see. No longer do they have to use glasses or contact lenses like they once did. Now, there exists custom LASIK, making a persons vision even better than before. So is one better than the other?

Custom LASIK actually uses a kind of 3D measurement of your eye using light and the way it moves through your cornea. This has also become known as wavefront LASIK. Traditional LASIK merely used the prescription of a persons glasses or their contact lenses. From there, the procedure would go according to that prescription, adjusting no more than was necessary.

Wavefront LASIK goes beyond that and uses the measurement it gets from the light to make a kind of map of your cornea. This makes for a more personalized LASIK eye surgery experience. During the procedure, the laser pulses focus on all the imperfections found when the map of your eye was created, adjusting your cornea to a more precise shape that will better process light, thus improving the images you see.

Wavefront LASIK allows for the correction of what are called higher-order aberrations. These aberrations determine how well you can see, and being able to correct them helps to remove other complications that can arise after traditional LASIK, such as glare, sunbursts, and halos around light. In many ways, custom LASIK is better than the traditional version because it can minister to more issues. In fact, there are many who believe that there are greater chances of achieving 20/20 vision with the newest type of LASIK eye surgery.

Though the debate is still ongoing, custom LASIK is gaining in support and popularity. As always, consult with your doctor first before making any decisions.
