subject: What Is Custom Lasik Surgery? Custom Lasik Procedure Overview [print this page]

Custom LASIK surgery can sound a little strange. How can a surgery designed for visual improvement be customized?

When laser eye surgery was developed, its initial use was limited. The goal of this type of surgery was to only fix certain eye issues, such as myopia (shortsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Based upon the persons prescription, the laser could be used in such a way as to correct these problems, reshaping the cornea so that a person was, in essence, looking through their own improved lens.

With the advent of newer technologies, vision improvement using custom LASIK surgery has appeared. To have ideal vision, there are more issues to be addressed. The varying degrees of visual imperfections in eyes can be tended to in order to bring the patient a crisp, clear image once the laser eye surgery is over. Custom LASIK takes in all the information about your eye in order to better diagnose and treat the patient and his or her vision.

There are many custom LASIK systems in use right now. Instead of just using your basic prescription, the technology creates a personalized map of your eye in order to address each imperfection in the cornea and then correct it using carefully placed laser pulses. Though it is similar to traditional LASIK, it is much more defined, with the results bringing you even clearer images and overall visual improvement.

Custom LASIK uses the same tools as the traditional LASIK procedure, but may use a slightly higher number of laser pulses in order to adjust each and every cornea imperfection to give you better eyesight. If you arent sure what type of procedure you need, talk to your eye doctor about your questions and concerns and he or she can fully inform you about whether or not custom LASIK surgery is for you and/or if laser eye surgery would best suit your needs.
