subject: Forget The Rules For Finding A Job [print this page]

Job hunting can be a tedious endeavor full of ups and downs. The job openings can appear few and far between. On the other hand, job hunting can be very rewarding even before you actually land a job. If you're motivated enough to think outside the box, you may be able to find a job that's the perfect fit for you.

The job hunt process is very familiar. You read want ads then mail a resume and hope to get an interview. Until you know one way or the other, you're forced to wait anxiously to hear that you're hired. When searching for a job, consider that these "rules" could be meant to be broken. It never hurts to consider solving a problem in a new way.

Don't react, create. Everyone in the job market can reply to an advertisement for an open job. Try contacting businesses even if you're not sure that they need a position filled. In this way, you put yourself on the business' radar for now or in the future. Being familiar with particular business practice is also a good idea because it allows you to offer specific ways you can help the company.

Don't be boxed in by specific qualifications. Businesses often use stipulations like years of experience or a particular certification to discourage people who aren't dedicated to getting a position. In many cases, you are in no way disqualified from getting a job as long as you can show how you're qualified. Don't hesitate to apply even if you don't exactly fit the mold. For one thing, all companies will teach you their particular way of doing things. Selling your special skills to a company is a great strategy.

Think outside the box with old methods. There's nothing wrong with some traditional methods of job hunting as long as you make the process work for you. Classified ads are useful, but it's also a good idea to try online job searches. Creating a unique website is an example of a way to let your name and qualifications be seen.

Finding a job isn't a one-size-fits-all process. Following someone's guidelines is only right if it works for you. Creativity and being proactive are just two of the traits that can help you find the right job path.
