subject: Business Vehicle Fleets : How To Minimize Costs [print this page]

For haulage firms, or any company that has to maintain a fleet of vehicles, then keeping these machines running can be a very expensive business. As well as buying and maintaining the vehicles, tax and insurance also need to be factored in. Not forgetting the cost of fuel either, the rising price of which has seen many companies go out of business over the past few years. All these factors combined making running a business that is reliant on vehicles extremely expensive.

Some of the more obvious ways that they can reduce costs are not feasible because they must adhere to strict health and safety regulations. So, attempting to over look certain necessary expenses is simply not acceptable. However, there are plenty of legitimate ways in which these companies are able to save themselves some cash.

One prime example of where money can be saved is vehicle maintenance and, due to the amount of vehicles being talked about, small savings can soon add up. If you have had your own car repaired then you will know that vehicle maintenance costs are high, so just imagine the costs incurred for maintaining and repairing a whole fleet of vehicles.

Whether spare parts are bought from a manufacturer or a licensed dealer, they are going to be expensive. Fortunately, there is an alternative. For example, second hand components can be bought for a much cheap price from a salvage yard. There are plenty of salvage yards that specialize in breaking trucks and other commercial vehicles, so you should not have any difficulty in locating the spare components you need.

Take Scania parts for example, which is a popular and established brand, you would have no problem finding those in just about any specialist salvage yard. Bought brand new, Scania parts would cost you several times more than second hand ones, and savings like that multiplied across a fleet of vehicles are substantial.

It is not uncommon for people to question whether second hand parts are reliable. However, there is no need to worry as many of the components you will find in scrap yards have plenty of life left in them. Vehicles that have been scrapped because they have been damaged in a collision have plenty of perfectly good useable parts in them.

Should a vehicle have been hit from the side, then all its parts on the other side will have come through the collision unscathed. This is the beauty of using scrap yards. However, this is just one way to save money on maintaining your commercial vehicles. There are plenty of other things that you can do too, such as taking steps to improve fuel economy which should have a noticeable effect when it comes to reducing running costs!
