subject: Ecommerce Grows Up In 2010 And Opens Up New Opportunities In Economy [print this page]

Following the recent news has become uplifting and encouraging. Retail stores are now able to compete with the big industry leaders like never before. People are buying products and services in a whole new way. That's a big relief for me. I am a former art director from the world of advertising and I can honestly say that I have seen it all. From the early dawn of Interactive media, corporate presentations and the dot com era to its now present state. The world of Internet marketing has grown up in the last few months. It is now possible for retailers to go up head to head with big corporations. This really levels the playing field quite a bit.

As a marketing guy I find that very encouraging. The scene is it was once known is shattered into fragments of its once hyped up glory. There was once an age and it wasn't too long ago where we would have caterers ship in food to the graphic design and art studios to feed the 20 something creative kids. These guys would literally bankrupt the investors. The problem was that there was really no benefit for throwing this kind of money into online advertising. The reason was simple. The search engines were in their infancy back then. It was a lot like playing in the dark and this resulted in a lot of reckless spending.

Today it's all changed. We are able to sell the most obscure things like Yamaha ATV parts, classic European automotive parts, new autos, beauty products, green clean businesses and high end lip gloss. We're selling everything from Kawasaki motorcycles to legal services and this is all without the aid of television, printed newspaper advertising or radio. This is also changing the way coupons are delivered. When the economy gets strained you will find a lot of door to door coupon guys trying to help retailers. Online coupons are only valuable if they are found and used by the consumer. Otherwise they are pretty much worthless no matter if they are online or in print.

What this is going to mean for retailers is nothing short of a revolution. What I see happening now is pretty incredible. We are seeing an industry shift with how businesses advertise. Businesses are now able to compete with industry leaders. Let me give you an example. I have seen an independent insurance agent compete against a health insurance leader like Blue Cross in a matter of hours. These two businesses now share the same space on Google page 1. When you see things like this take place you know the economy is going to go through some major shifts. This is not only good for ecommerce but it's also going to do some fantastic things in our economy.
