subject: 3 Tips to Get a Higher Vertical [print this page]

So you need to learn how to get a higher vertical but youre not sure where to start. Im going to give you 3 basic but proven tips to increase your vertical leap and I will break each one down so that you can start implementing them right away and be on your way to jumping higher.

1. Proper training Im sure you already know you need to be working out in order to get a higher vertical but many people dont know exactly which exercises they need to be doing. You should be focusing on a combination of weight training and also plyometrics and vertical jumping exercises. Its been proven that when you combine the two, your results will be significantly higher.

First, lets talk about weight training. The most important exercises you could be doing to get a higher vertical are heavy squats, straight-leg deadlifts, calf exercises, and power movements such as hang cleans. Your goal here is to train the exact muscles that fire when you're jumping and make yourself more explosive.

Secondly, your plyometric and vertical jumping exercises. These build up your explosiveness, quickness, and specifically train your fast twitch muscle fibers which are the fibers that fire when you're doing anything explosive like sprinting or jumping. A few examples are jump squats, box jumps, lateral jumps, and one leg jumps. Make sure you're performing these as explosive as possible to see the most benefit and get a higher vertical.

2. Nutrition - Just as important as the training itself is your nutrition. Especially when you're a training athlete, you need to fuel your body with the proper nutrients to allow it to recover and build muscle faster. Your body operates much better when you fuel it with clean food. You should be eating a diet rich in protein, the proper carbs (whole grain sources), fiber, and of course lots of fruits and vegetables. Also taking a good multi-vitamin is a good idea. On top of that, drink a ton of water.

3. Rest and Recovery - One of the most overlooked aspects of people that are training is the rest and recovery period. This is just as important as being in the gym and working out. Without proper rest, you will not fully recover from the previous workout and your muscles will not rebuild completely leaving your results to suffer. To get a higher vertical, make sure you allow yourself around 8 hours of sleep each night and do NOT train every day. I recommend about 4 times a week.

If you follow those 3 steps above, you will be on your way to get a higher vertical in no time.
