Recently, the first licensing of Botox as a migraine medication took place in the U.K. Licensed by MHRA, Botox will now be available as a migraine medication for those suffering from chronic migraine conditions. These will include adults who suffer from at least fifteen days a month of headaches with eight of these days including migraines.
This is the first time that this substance will be used as a prophylactic for migraines. According to studies however chronic migraines affect a large number of people-up to 700,000 people in the U.K. alone. While many people suffer from the occasional migraine, the chronic condition can have a huge cost on life quality and work productivity.
According to medical authorities, new medications are needed in order to deal with these serious migraine conditions. Typical treatments involve over the counter medications as well as prescription medications, but these are not always effective and can have numerous side effects.
Botox on the other hand has recently been studied as a new treatment for neurological disorders. Clinical studies revealed that after fifty-six weeks of receiving Botox injections, the non-placebo group had a fifty percent reduction in migraine days. This was a significant reduction in comparison to those participants in the study receiving only placebos.
Patients received five courses of treatment every twelve weeks. These involved a variety of injections into specific head and neck muscles.
With the promising results it may not be too long before more people suffering from this condition can receive Botox as a preventative treatment. However, at present, most will have to wait or speak to their doctors and physicians about the possibilities of gaining a prescription

As always it is important to speak to your doctor about chronic headaches in order to rule out any other underlying condition. Continued headaches and/or migraines can be a sign of more dangerous disorder and sufferers should therefore be evaluated by professionals.
