subject: What Is An Apartment? [print this page] One of the most popular forms of housing in the Philippines are apartments. An apartment, or commonly called as flat in other countries such as in the US, is a self-contained housing unit that occupies only part of a building, which is known as apartment buildings. The reason why apartments became popular in many countries, particularly in the Philippines, is its affordability.
According to Real estate Philippines specialists, compared with condominiums and houses, rents are only paid to land lords which makes it affordable for many people. However, not all types of apartments are as affordable as others may seem. Apartment types such as Studio, efficiency, bedsit, or bachelor style apartment tend to be the smallest apartments with the cheapest rents in a given area.
A studio apartment, or efficiency apartment or bachelor/bachelorette style apartment, is a type of apartment in which the living room, bedroom and kitchenette are combined into a single unit, let alone the bathroom. According to Real estate Philippines specialists, a "bachelor" or "efficiency" apartment is usually smaller than a studio apartment.
Other than the studio, one-bedrooms are also a type of apartment which is slightly larger than a conventional studio type apartments. The only difference of a one-bedroom from a studio is that one bedroom is separate from the rest of the apartment. There are also the two-bedroom, three-bedroom which are bigger than the one-bedroom. This, however, is much more expensive than the studio type, yet not as expensive as other types of housing.
Apartment Hotels
A rare type of apartment, apartment hotels are a type of accommodation, described as "a serviced apartment complex that uses a hotel style booking system". It is similar to renting an apartment, but with no fixed contracts and occupants can 'check-out' whenever they wish. This type of apartment, however, isn't very popular in the Philippines and only a few apartments hotels are around the country.
Difference of Apartments from Condominium
There has been many speculations of what is the difference between an apartment and a condominium. Apartments and condominiums are similar in physical form. According to Real estate Philippines specialists, a building to be used as a condominium could also be used as an apartment building. The difference between these two types of housing is the legal binding. Condominium units are usually sold individually to separate owners, while apartment units are rented to individual tenants.
