Step three Draw up a shortlist of builders in your area using a local business directory. Where possible read the user reviews and ratings that are available to whittle the list down.
Step four Consider speaking to the National Federation of Builders or another major trade body to see which of your shortlist are registered with them. This should be a mark of quality.
Step five Get a quote from two or three of the builders you have shortlisted. Ask for them in writing and make sure they make a note of any planning permission that could be needed.
Step six Ask the builders for references and examples of their work. If possible, speak to their former customers for verification of the quality of the work performed.
